Consequences of Underage Drinking

“The short- and long-term consequences that arise from underage alcohol consumption are astonishing in their range and magnitude, affecting adolescents, the people around them, and society as a whole.” – Surgeon General’s Call to Action

The consequences of underage drinking have been highlighted especially in campaigns against underage drinking. These underage drinking consequences are used by local and national officials as well as social organizations to try and raise significant amounts of awareness among adolescents.

The increased incidence of campus-related rape and sexual abuse are attributed to underage drinking. As alcohol relieves inhibitions, adolescents will become more confident in doing the things he or she could not previously do. This mostly includes realizing their sexual desires and fantasies. In one survey, an estimated 10% of high school girls reported that they had been raped. Research studies suggest that alcohol consumption by the offender and/or the victim will increase the chances of getting sexually assaulted.[1]

And a more dangerous consequence to alcohol consumption by minors is drinking and driving. Being the number one cause of death among teens involved in car accidents, drinking and driving is one of the most pressing concerns involving underage drinking. States have launched several laws in an attempt to ultimately put an end to underage drinking and driving.[2]

Another equally dangerous consequence of underage drinking is that it may ultimately lead to alcohol addiction. Early alcohol consumption may have long-term effects. One study found that people who started drinking alcohol early, before 15 years of age, are four times as much chance of becoming an alcohol dependent than those who start drinking after reaching the age of 20.[3] And what’s more, shocking results in a study conducted by SAMHSA in 2006 stated that underage drinkers are TWENTY-TWO times more likely to use marijuana and FIFTY times more like to use cocaine. [4]

And its most severe health consequence is to the child’s fragile brain. Reports released by the American Medical Association in 2003 stated that frontal-lobe development of the brain as well as establishment of neural pathways continues until a child reaches 16.  Damage brought on by alcohol may be irreversible and can cause profound learning disabilities.[5]

Underage drinking can have serious repercussions on a teen’s habits, thoughts and can have more grave effects in his or her future. The consequences of underage drinking should serve as warning, that if we do not start taking action today, the thought of what might happen to our children of tomorrow is Frightening.
